International Driver's Permit

If you are traveling abroad, even if you have no plans to drive, it would be a good idea to invest twelve dollars in an international driver’s permit. It’s basically a translation of your own license in eleven languages and is often necessary if you want to rent a car. You never know when you might need to do that. It’s also a good idea to find out if there is anything special you need to know about tolls or fees or permits of any kind that you may not be used to. The IDP is not a license. It is a translation of your license. You must get it in the country where you are licensed to drive so apply for one in plenty of time before your vacation. You will need to fill out an application which you will find in a link on the Triple A FAQ page. You will also need two passport pictures for the permit. And you must be at least 18 to get an IDP.

Before you travel, check with your insurance agent to see if your policy covers international travel. You might need to take out extra insurance, or the country you are visiting may require you to buy insurance. Traveler’s insurance is always a good idea. Things do Happen. The best place to find out about insurance requirements in a foreign country is to check with that country’s consulate. Search for ‘name of country consulate’. You will probably just get contact information so you will have to call or write for details. Give yourself plenty of time before you travel.

If you plan to drive in Mexico or Canada, check your policy (don’t just call your agent). You may already be covered. If not, you have two options: you can ask your agent if you can get insurance added for the time you’ll be traveling, or you can buy a separate policy from someone else.
